Today is the first Sunday of Advent. This is a special time for the church to remember and celebrate the birth of Jesus. Today shall begin with reflecting on some of the prophecies of Jesus’ birth and life. This is not an extensive list, but a good representation to encourage us.

Born from Woman (Gen 3:15; Gal 4:4)
In the garden of Eden, the Lord told the serpent (Satan in disguise): “I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; He shall crush your head, and you shall bruise Him on the heel” (Gen 3:15). This prophecy is fulfilled in Jesus. Jesus is the seed of the woman (virgin birth) who crushed the devil’s head and bruised His heel (crucifixion which destroys the work of the devil). Paul wrote, “But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law” (Gal 4:4).
Descendant of Abraham (Gen 12:3; Matt 1:1, Gal 3:8-9)
The Lord promised to Abraham, “I will bless those who bless you, and I will curse him who curses you; and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.” Matthew records for us in the genealogy of Jesus that He is the Son of Abraham. The blessings promised to Abraham come through Jesus. Paul wrote, “The Scriptures, foreseeing that God would justify the nations by faith, preached the gospel to Abraham beforehand, saying, ‘In you all the nations shall be blessed.’ So then those who are of faith are blessed with believing Abraham” (Gal 3:8-9).
From the Tribe of Judah (Gen 49:10; Luke 3:33)
In Genesis 49, we read the patriarch Jacob’s blessing to his sons. To his son Judah, he said, “The scepter shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh comes; and to Him shall be the obedience of the people” (Gen 49:10). 1 Chronicles 5:2 tells us that “Judah prevailed over his brothers, and from him came the leader, yet the birthright belonged to Joseph.” Matthew 1:2 and Luke 3:33 tell us that Jesus is a descendant of Judah.
Heir to the throne of David (Is 9:7; Luke 1:32-33)
Jesus is from the line of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Judah and inherits the throne of King David. Isaiah 9:7 says, “Of the increase of His government and peace there will be no end, upon the throne of David and over his kingdom, to order it and establish it with judgment and justice from that time forward, even forever.” The angel Gabriel confirmed this to Mary when he said, “He will be great, and will be called the son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end” (Luke 1:32).
Anointed and Eternal (Psalm 45:6-7; Heb 1:8-12)
Jesus was born into this world, but He lives forever. The writer of Hebrews, showing the supremacy of Jesus over the prophets and angels, quotes from Psalm 45 and Psalm 102, “To the Son He says: Your throne, O God, is forever and ever; A scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your Kingdom. You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness; Therefore God, Your God, has anointed You with the oil of gladness more than Your companions. And You, Lord, in the beginning laid the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the work of Your hands: They will perish, but You remain: and they will all grow old like a garment. Like a cloak You will fold them up, and they will be changed. But You are the same, and Your years will not fail” (Heb 1:8-12).
